What Is Piezo Rhinoplasty

Ultrasound Technology in Modern Nose Surgery | NYC Specialist Explains

Hey everyone, today I wanted to address a topic that I get asked frequently about, and that’s: what is a piezo rhinoplasty or an ultrasonic rhinoplasty. So, I wanted to clear that up today in this video.

Piezoelectric refers to a technology that is based on ultrasound, so that’s why ultrasonic is sort of an interchangeable word, where the instrument vibrates at a frequency that only cuts bone.

So right away, you know, it’s just referring to the bony parts of rhinoplasty, which is typically the top part, the nasal hump and all that kind of thing.

It’s a great technology.

What if you try to cut the bone with traditional instruments, you can get uncontrolled fractures. You can cause a little bit of damage to other surrounding tissues. You can dislocate the cartilage that’s attached to it, but with this device, you can operate with a lot of confidence that nothing surrounding the bone will get injured.

The other thing is it’s very precise, so you can actually use it as a sculpting tool, which is very different than the sort of traditional chisels and hammers that are used to do the bony work.

So, it’s a really powerful tool, but it’s not for every case. In some cases that need minimal bony work, it really doesn’t make a big difference.

The other thing that you see with this, because it has less damage to surrounding tissues, is that you tend to get a lot less bruising.

It improves the recovery time, especially if there’s a lot of bony work that’s done in a primary rhinoplasty, so it’s a great tool.
