Does Rhinoplasty Keep Changing After 1 Year?

A lot of patients think that once they hit the one-year mark after rhinoplasty,

0:04

that’s the final result. And honestly, one year is an important milestone. By

0:08

then, most of the swelling is gone. The nose is stable, and it’s usually a very

0:12

good representation of the outcome. But it’s not truly final. The nose can and

0:17

will continue to change for years after surgery, especially in the tip. The more

0:22

subtle swelling takes a long time to resolve, and rhinoplasty healing happens

0:25

very gradually. As that last bit of swelling improves, the nose often

0:29

becomes more refined. Definition increases, the tip sharpens, small

0:34

asymmetries can soften over time. One of the interesting things in my practice is

0:38

seeing patients come back three, four, even 5 years later. Sometimes we compare

0:43

photos from the one-year mark to where they are years later, and the difference

0:46

can actually be pretty noticeable. The nose often looks more natural, more

0:50

settled, and more defined. And that’s especially true in thicker skin patients

0:55

where the skin can take a very long time to fully contract around the underlying

0:59

structure. At the same time, when you’re looking at changes over many years, you

1:02

also have to remember that the nose ages like the rest of the face. Skin quality

1:07

changes, soft tissue changes, support structures change over time. So years

1:12

later, what you’re seeing is really a combination of continued healing and

1:15

normal aging. I still think the one-year mark is a very reasonable point to

1:19

assess the result. It’s just important to understand that healing doesn’t

1:22

suddenly stop there. Rhinoplasty continues to evolve long after that. And

1:27

sometimes the best refinements happen much later.
